PM Surya Ghar Subsidy: Amount per kW, Cap and Examples

The central subsidy is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW plus ₹18,000 for the third kW. Nothing is paid above 3 kW, so the most a household gets is ₹78,000. Special category states and UTs get ₹33,000 and ₹19,800.

Subsidy by system size

Worked from the official rates. Your state may add its own top-up on top of this central amount.

SystemNormal statesSpecial category
1 kW₹30,000₹33,000
2 kW₹60,000₹66,000
2.5 kW₹69,000₹75,900
3 kW₹78,000₹85,800
5 kW (subsidy capped at 3 kW)₹78,000₹85,800

The arithmetic

For 2.5 kW in a normal state: 2 kW × ₹30,000 + 0.5 kW × ₹18,000 = ₹69,000. The subsidy is worked out on the rated capacity of the solar modules, not the inverter. Try your own size in the calculator.

Who is eligible and what the rules are

  • You apply as a household electricity consumer with a valid consumer account number with your distribution company (DISCOM). Tenants: the guideline does not spell this out, so ask your DISCOM.
  • Modules must be domestically manufactured from domestic cells (Domestic Content Requirement). This is an essential condition.
  • The system must be grid-connected. Off-grid systems are not eligible.
  • The subsidy is paid once per installation. A system moved to a new location does not get it again.
  • If you already got a subsidy for a smaller system under an earlier scheme and now enlarge it, you can claim only for the added capacity, up to 3 kW in total.
  • You can add a battery or other extras, but the subsidy is still calculated on the solar module capacity.
  • You can choose to forgo the subsidy through the portal's "Give It Up" option; you are then free to use non-DCR modules.

Special category states and UTs

These get ₹33,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹19,800 for the third kW:

  • The North-Eastern states, including Sikkim
  • Uttarakhand
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Jammu & Kashmir
  • Ladakh
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands
  • Lakshadweep

State top-ups

States and UTs may add their own subsidy on top of the central one, and it is processed through the same national portal. Amounts differ by state and change, so this guide does not list them. Ask your DISCOM or check the portal for your state.

Housing societies and RWAs

For common facilities such as lifts, lights, pumps and EV charging, the subsidy is ₹18,000 per kW, up to 500 kW (counted at 3 kW per house).

What to know before you sign with a vendor

  • You pay the full price first and the subsidy follows, so judge the quote by the cost after subsidy. See what rooftop solar costs.
  • Choose only a vendor registered on the national portal; the scheme works only through registered vendors.
  • Apply on the official portal, not through a middleman who asks for an advance "subsidy fee". The portal itself, not an agent, is the only route to the subsidy.

Common questions

What is the maximum subsidy under PM Surya Ghar?

₹78,000 per household, for a system of 3 kW or more. Capacity above 3 kW gets no extra central subsidy.

Is the subsidy paid before or after installation?

After. The residential subsidy applies to the capex model, which means you pay the installation cost first and the subsidy is paid to you once the DISCOM has inspected and approved the system.

Do the panels have to be made in India?

Yes. Modules must meet the Domestic Content Requirement: domestically manufactured modules made from domestically manufactured cells. Using non-DCR modules in any form makes the installation ineligible.

Is an off-grid system eligible?

No. Off-grid installations are not eligible. The system must be connected to the grid.
